The prolonged downturn over the past 3 years has had a big impact on the Upstream E&P Industry. There have been some hard lessons learned and unfortunately, some very deep layoffs to the likes we haven’t seen since the 80’s. This time, we have seen many people leave the industry out of necessity to pursue other financial means and we have seen many retire. There is reluctance for some college students to consider a career in oil and gas because of this last downturn.
The challenge that the industry is going to be facing in the years to come is going to be a talent shortage. This, in addition to losing some collective knowledge from the experienced generation who are retiring, is going to have an impact on the Upstream E&P business.
Having said that, companies have also learned how to do things better and smarter and have utilized technology in ways they haven’t done so in the past. The new buzz is Digital Transformation and it will be very interesting to see how Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) will impact how companies will extrapolate Big Data and make good business decisions.
